On a quiet day in March 2018 a number of Oundle’s business community received an email containing a plea from the Friends of Oundle Parish Church. The Friends are an independent charity (est 1983) separate to the religious side of St Peter’s who’s mission is to help maintain and enhance the church as a building, being as it is an asset to to town and wider community whether they are a churchgoers or not.
The message was that urgent work that was required in the Church Tower to repair the Town Clock and the bells. The clock had now actually stopped working and required a full face clean, new mechanism and electric motors – basically almost the same work as Big Ben albeit on a slightly less grandiose scale. The message was that around £10k in funds would be required and the Friends would be looking to raise this amount as a matter of urgency.
The Friends approached Philip Amps first and he then made contact with a small group of members from the local business community and Oundle Business Association, many of whom had experience of putting on town events from the Oundle Carnival committees of old. A meeting was arranged and soon it became apparent that there was an opportunity to create an event based around the Market Place that would attract lots of people to Oundle to encourage local trade and most importantly, to provide the foundation for a major fund-raising event. From there Oundle Vintage Festival was born with a date picked out of the weekend of 17/18 May 2019.
